Sony's Rootkit DRM uninstaller still MIA

Posted by Xavier Ashe on November 7, 2005

Want to uninstall the rootkit that Sony installs with their copy protected CDs?  First you have to ask nicely.  Mark Russinovich (who broke the story last week) tries to get the uninstaller.

There’s no way to access the uninstaller without providing this information, and clicking on the Sony privacy policy link at the bottom of the page takes you to a notice that your email address can be added to various Sony marketing lists.

A
few minutes after submitting the form I received an email assigning me
a case ID and directing me to another page on Sony’s site where I would
have to submit an uninstall request a second time.

I’ve filled out the second form and am waiting for the follow-up email.

Mark also discovered that the software phones home everytime you play
the CD, allowing Sony to track howmany times you insert the CD and your
IP.  This is not covered in the EULA and Sony denies that it is
even happening.  But Ethereal doesn't lie.  Read Mark's blog and all of the comments, including this jewel:

Did anyone click on the link MARK provided and actually LISTEN to the audio??

In
this Audio, you will hear a comment from Thomas Hessa (not sure of
spelling), PRESIDENT of Sony BMG's Global Digital Business. In this
Audio and he says “Most people, I think, do not even know what a
Rootkit is, so why should they care about it?”

FREAKING UNBELIEVEABLE!

Click on the LISTEN button on this link here to HEAR it yourself!
